Marcelle Nienaber

GRIII Instructor

"The disgrace is not in failing, but in giving up."

My interest in aviation started at a very young age. I started my training when I was 14 years old and had the privilege to start flying solo at the age of 15, becoming the youngest female pilot in South-Africa to fly solo. I obtained my PPL when I was in grade 11 in 2014 and thereafter completed my Commercial license after matric.

Travelling abroad to visit my father was a big part of my life.

My most memorable moment in aviation is the day I went solo. I had no idea I was about to go solo. I just thought it was a general dual check. When my flight instructor and I were in flight, he told me this was in fact a solo check. We Proceeded to do 3 circuits, I dropped my instructor off and there I went. It was the most magical feeling. I blocked out the fact that I was flying alone. As soon as I landed and tower congratulated me I realised what I had just achieved. It was amazing. After I landed, news reporters from different agencies were all there, and I think that freaked me out more than my actual flight. Al in all it was an incredible day and something I'll remember for the rest of my life.
